PBD launches free online GCSE courses

* We are now no longer able to offer maths and English GCSEs for free outside an apprenticeship with PBD. Please click here for further information *

PBD has teamed up with mobile learning experts GCSEPod to offer free online GCSE maths and English courses to early years staff and any other interested adults.

Anyone over 18, who does not already have a GCSE grade C in maths or English, can access the courses free of charge. They do not have to be training with PBD to enrol. A deposit of £100 per subject is fully refundable as soon as the learner sits the examination.

Topic reviews (online lessons created on an iPad using interactive whiteboard tools and presented by specialist tutors) will be available from PBD’s Moodle based learning environment. There will also be practice questions, worked examples and examination papers. Learners will study in their own time, supported by regular webinars and 1:1 online tutorials.

All PBD learners will have free access to the award winning GCSEPod resources, widely acclaimed by maths and English teachers and school heads. GCSEPod offers a wide selection of short revision podcasts: PBD learners will be able to set up personal playlists and download favourite podcasts to their tablet or smartphone, to be watched at any time.

The new project is in response to new government rules making GCSE maths and English a requirement for Early Years Educator courses. Ross Midgley, PBD director, said. “We have our reservations about some of the changes, but our priority has to be to support learners”.

He continued “Many people will have struggled with these subjects at school. Putting them back in classrooms is often not the best answer. We need to build on the practical skills which they have already developed as adults and make the subjects engaging and understandable.”

The GCSE exam system is a big challenge for work based training providers. But PBD is building a network of schools and other centres who are willing to allow learners to sit the exams as ‘private candidates’.

PBD’s GCSE courses will be available from mid October and sample material is available on its website, www.pbdevelopment.co.uk/gcse. PBD can be contacted on 01440 731731.
